⭐⭐⭐⭐
I loved the description of this book and I’m always excited to read translated fiction, as well as speculative fiction (which like other reviewers I’d categorise this rather than sci-fi).
There are five different stories in this journey, focusing mainly on the main couple, but also branching out to experiences of family and friends. The New Year party felt like a friend retelling some surreal experiences, and I was particularly immersed in the final chapter which is told from the point of view of Carlos’s brother.
I did not expect the resolution of the book, which was nice! Although the book is about the Earth (and more specifically Spain where the characters are based) becoming less inhabitable, it was a good change of pace to view it from the point of ordinary people who weren’t particularly catastrophising about it. They felt quite real – you have plenty to think about, but you also have to carry on and do what’s best for your family.
3.5 stars, rounding up to 4 as it was a fabulous concept for a debut novel.
